Ideas and Inspirations

This is my ever-moving notice board. My environment influences the way I eat and the way I celebrate, so here are some of the things on my mind. . .

Ron Finley - Gangsta Gardening

Love, love the idea of guerilla gardening. Do yourself a favour and watch this TEDTalk. It'll make you want to plan something... now.

Grassroots Pantry, Hong Kong

Peggy at Grassroots Pantry has been a real inspiration to me. Every Earth Hour dinner, every vegan banquet, and of course the newly opened Prune. We never miss an opportunity for a wine tasting, and I'm yet to join one of their raw cooking classes! A stylish restaurant where they're not afraid to put in the hard work required to make exceptional raw, vegan delicacies. It's the quintessential hong kong restaurant, tucked away in Sheung Wan. Grassroots is responsible for my growing addiction to coconut vegan ice cream!

Animals Australia

Because all animals deserve love! Anti-factory farming campaigners in Australia, doing a great job to keep animal welfare front-and-center in the minds of consumers. By working with (and not against!) government, retailers and grocers, and the community, I have faith that this organisations approach will make a huge impact on the lives of farmed animals everywhere.

PlanEat

Just watched this documentary and really enjoyed it ~ no glamour or pizazz, just professionals armed with decades of scientific fact about the detriments of animal protein in the human diet. Heart disease and cancer are shown to be reversible with a plant based diet, and the impact of farming on the land, atmosphere and oceans is measured and delivered in a compelling message. Plus so many tasty recipes to try on their website!

No Meat Athlete

What an awesome blog! Matt Frazier eats, writes and runs on vegetables. Very practical, down to earth, and every-day.

Eating Animals

This book was sometimes troubling, always honest, intense, brilliant and miserable simultaneously.

I instantaneously lent my copy to a colleague, and bought a new copy for my best friend - and as a result I'm faced with the trouble of whether I'm ready to be a missionary for this cause or not. . . All of my dinner conversations seem to reference this book lately - is that getting boring? It's really been a profound read for me, putting down on paper everything that's been ticking away in my mind - he brought it all together in a cohesive philosophical argument, which I felt was very even handed but obviously passionate.

I hope I can be an ambassador for this book without stepping over the line to become a vigilante.

Local Harvest

I'm so excited to see Australia following in the footsteps of other countries, like the US, to move towards local, sustainable, seasonal harvesting. There are so many delicious vegetables to be had on my table!

Hong Kong has something similar called HomeGrownFoods, although with it's own spin - including cooking classes, and supply to restaurants (like Posto Publico)! The site doesn't include the community search function, but I'm glad I can easily get fresh, seasonal veg, delivered to my door.

I'd love to know where I can source organic seedlings and some decent planter boxes in HK. . . more investigation to be done.

  1. Some great links - I read eating animals and was both amazed and horrified. A great book if you're trying to flush the ignorance from your body...
